Volunteer Overseas in Peru | ![]() |
The Republic of Peru is located in western South America and is bordered
by Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, and the Pacific Ocean. The capital city is Lima. Peru’s
population is made up of many different ethnicities. The main language is Spanish, but many native languages
such as Quechua, Aymara and several dialects are also spoken. It is home to a mixture of cultural traditions
which has resulted in a wide diversity of expressions in fields such as art, cuisine, literature, and music.
Peru is a growing country, but there are still many living in poverty. Spend some time in Peru in one of our
volunteer programs, and you will get to know the cultural richness of our country and help those who are the most in need.
Our volunteer program in Peru is run by our partner Volunteers for International Partnership (VIP.)
Upon your arrival a representative will be waiting for you at the airport and will
transfer you to your host family. The next morning you will be picked up to begin your 4 day
orientation with a walking tour around the most popular districts of Lima. After lunch, you will be
taken to our offices to continue with your orientation and introduction to the program, where we
will explain more about the projects, the host families, and life in Peru. We also can help you
to arrange your travel around Peru.
Arrival Dates
International arrivals should be arranged for Thursday, with few exceptions. For more specific
dates see the arrival dates listed on VIP's website.
Volunteers reside with Peruvian families and are treated as family members. This means that you will have obligations, like cleaning your bedroom, doing household chores and following family rules. Participants may share rooms with other volunteers depending on the season, and the bathroom is usually shared. Families will provide bed linen. The houses are located near to shopping centers, cinemas, internet cafes, etc, depending on the type of program.
Our Spanish program is based on general subjects, such as Peruvian Culture, daily situations, and
daily life that will help you to improve your language skills. There is greater emphasis on speaking
the language, so you will become more confident to interact with locals. The participant is placed at
his/her own level individually or in small groups and taught by qualified teacher.
We also offer a Spanish program in Cusco.
Project Overview
Volunteers will work from Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 13:00 hrs. (Some projects can have different schedule).
As part of your orientation and induction, a local representative will assist you the first days during your
project, picking you up from your homestay and taking you to your workplace, until you get use to public transportation, etc.
In Lima most of our projects are located in developing districts in the outskirts of the city. In the project there
will always be a person responsible to work with you, assisting you in your daily work. The same workplace
conditions apply for our programs in Cusco and Chiclayo.
