Individual Volunteer Programs in Albania

Albania In the heart of the Mediterranean, on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, Albania, the land of eagles, still relatively unspoiled by globalization, offers an inspiring mixture of civilizations and cultures. Our Albanian programs are offered through our partner organization - Experiment-Albania. Experiment Albania has developed a lot of relationships with non-profit organizations in Albania, creating many individual volunteer placement possibilities for those who would like to have such experience in this country. These are placements for 18-30 years old volunteers.

Program Orientation

The participant will be welcomed at the airport by a representative of Experiment Albania. A two-day orientation program will be provided upon arrival in Tirana. This program orientation will cover basic information about the volunteer placement and about customs & daily life in Albania. During the orientation, basic Albanian language course will be provided to the participant, in order to enable him/her to communicate with the local people. This orientation concludes with the exploration of Tirana, the capital of Albania, visiting some cultural and historical buildings like National Historic Museum, Mosque of Et’hem Bej, etc.

Volunteer Service

Following the orientation, the participant will start the volunteer program. Some available individual volunteer placements are as below:


Romani Baxt Albania (Romani Community Center)

“R.B.A” is a Romani community based and non-profit center, situated in the periphery of Tirana, the capital of Albania. This is a training centre, especially for Romani children, in order to make possible the integration of this community in the daily life of the country. In this center, volunteers are needed in the following fields:

a- Teaching English to the Romani children. Volunteers for this program must be native speakers of English or use English in their daily life language. He/she must give children the possibility of learning English by means of developing the 4 basic skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

b- Office administration. The volunteer who will work as office administrator must create and elaborate new projects for the center, contacting other organizations or business institutions in order to raise funds for the projects, which he/she will create during the volunteer work in this center.

c- Animator for the social activities of Romani children. The volunteer will work in the center, creating new activities and games for the romani children. He/she will be responsible for the social activities of the children.

d- Women's health program. The female volunteer must be a professional doctor in the field of Gynecology and must be willing to counsel the Romani women about all gynecological problems.

Volunteers will work six hours/day and five days/week from 09:00-12:00 & 14:00-17:00. These projects are available all year round and can start every week beginning. Accommodation will be in a guest room in the romani community center. An Albanian romani family nearby the center will prepare the meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner) for the volunteer.

2-Deutschzentrum Tirana, Projektbüro Goethe-Institute

Deutschzentrum Tirana, Projektbüro Goethe-Institute is a German language teaching Institute in Tirana, Albania. In this Institute, teaching assistant volunteers are needed for German language courses. The volunteers must be German native speakers and graduated in German Language/teaching. He/she will assist the teacher in the classroom, during 2 hours per day from Monday to Friday (2 x 45 minutes). He/she will be responsible to teach the participants in the German language courses, according to the schedule with the principal teacher.

Work Periods:

  23 February – 25 June 2009 (Four month program)
  06 July – 31 July 2009 (One month intensive program)
  07 September – 02 October 2009 (One month intensive program)
  04 October 2009 – 12 February 2010 (Four month program)


3-Albanian Red Cross Society, Tirana Branch

The Albanian Red Cross was founded in 1921 and recognized by the International Committee of Red Cross in 1923. This society, in accordance with the Fundamental Principles of the Movement, strives to improve the life and dignity of people in need, by working to increase humanitarian action. The vision of the Albanian Red Cross is to become a well-developed humanitarian organization, helping vulnerable people to improve their health and social welfare. Tirana branch is one of the large branches of Albanian Red Cross in Albania. The main programs of Albanian Red Cross, in which volunteers are needed, are as follows:

Health Program: The Albanian Red Cross is active in health education, promotion of knowledge in reproductive health, infectious disease and hygiene, and promotion of blood donations. The goal of this program is to strengthen the health of population through the diffusion of information. There are two projects of this program in which volunteers can participate: AIDS Prevention (sportive & artistic activities with young people in order to inform them about this malady) and Personal & community hygiene (information & material distribution in primary schools).

First Aid Program: This program is focused on first aid demonstration for the community. Volunteers can offer their services at public events, in stadiums and on beaches.

Social Welfare Program: The Albania Red Cross social welfare program aims to support institutions for people with disabilities, the elderly and children, and to distribute goods to those in need. The program also provides wheelchairs and establishes self-help projects. There is one project of this program in which volunteers can participate: Elders Daily Center (the volunteer with assist the elders who frequent this center five days per week).

The volunteer will work about 5-6 hours/day and 5 days/week. The projects are available year round and can start every week beginning.

4-Public Nurseries in Tirana

These nurseries are public institutions for children between birth and 3 years old. Volunteer females are needed to carry about the nursery children. Experience with children is needed for this volunteer placement. The volunteer will work about 6-7 hours/day and 5 days/week. The projects are available all year around and can start every week beginning.

Visits during the individual Volunteer Program

During the program, according to the length of the stay (2 or 4 weeks) in the weekends, the volunteer, accompanied by the local experiment guide, will have the possibility to visit the cities of Kruja, Durres and Shkoder, including the most important historical and cultural places of these cities like Museum of Gjergj Kastrioti Scanderbeg, Ethnographic Museum and Traditional Bazaar in the city of Kruja, Roman Amphitheater and Archaeological Museum of Durres, Rozafa castle in Shkodra, etc.

Homestay

During the volunteer program (2 or 4 weeks), homestay will be provided for the participant, except the program in romani community center where the volunteer will be accommodated in a guest room in this center.
