Shanghai High School Exchange Programs
We believe this kind of program is beneficial to both foreign students coming to Shanghai, who can learn a new language
and culture, and to our own Chinese students, who can learn from the foreign students. Such an intense program will mean
students will learn Chinese very quickly in an environment that’s allows them to use their newly acquired language skills.
What We Can Offer
During their stay in Shanghai, students will live with Chinese students in a school dormitory or with a
host family, either a Chinese student’s family, or with a local home-stay family. This arrangement
will include full board, will offer the opportunity to practice speaking Chinese at home, and provide
the very best way to learn about the Chinese culture. We anticipate that students will build a life-long
friendship with their host family. For lessons, students will study core subjects like Mathematics and
English with other foreign students, and then subjects like PE, music and art will be studied alongside
Chinese students. In order for students to integrate themselves into their host school, we will try to
separate them into different age-classes so that they have more opportunity to make Chinese friends.
The Chinese School System
The Chinese school year consists of two terms and starts in the first week of September. The first term ends at the end
of January, two weeks before the Chinese New Year celebrations, and is followed by a three week vacation. The second
semester starts one week after the Chinese New Year and ends in the third week of June.
The school day starts at 7:30am. At 8:20am, morning exercises are held. Every lesson lasts 40 minutes, and 10 minute breaks
are offered between lessons. Lunch starts at 11:50AM and finish at 1:30pm. Afternoon lessons follow the lunch period.
Orientation
Before starting in their schools we would like to offer students a one week orientation including six hours of basic
Mandarin lessons; one culture course; and sightseeing around Shanghai. As well as allowing them to adapt to their environment
this will give students some time to get over their jet lag.
