2010 Program: Lily
They are what make NSLI-Y so much more than a “trip to China”. Things like
these are what truly kindle a love of a foreign culture, and what foster the desire in our students to return.

2009 Program: Sydney
"I will admit that I was nervous. I was nervous that the kids would be unhappy because of the cerebral palsey... But, when I walked into the playroom for the first time,
it was obvious that I was the only one who had a problem. I have never met happier or sweeter kids than at the CereCare
Wellness Center."

NSLI for Youth is a language learning program for American high school students
sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
NSLI-Y Chinese language programs are administered by
American Councils for International Education,
a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC that seeks to advance cross-border learning through
the design and implementation of educational programs that are well grounded in key world languages,
cultures and regions.
As American Councils' partner organization for the past several years
Xu Bo has hosted several large groups of NSLI-Youth students for an intensive Mandarin and cultural learning program.
The students receive Mandarin lessons aimed at improving their competence and understanding grammar, vocabulary
and speaking and reading skills.
They also take culture courses to learn about things like Chinese calligraphy, painting, paper-cutting,
martial arts, and history. All students participate in group tours to such famous sites as Beijing and Suzhou. The students are
usually hosted in the homes of local Chinese families in the city where they attend their program.
