They are what make NSLI-Y so much more than a “trip to China”. Things like these are what truly kindle a love of a foreign culture, and what foster the desire in our students to return.

Summer 2010
Life here, although not a local life per se, is far from a tourist’s life. I live in a regular Chinese apartment, take a public bus to school everyday, and participate in the activities of a Chinese family. We eat traditional Chinese meals, take trips to the park, and watch TV together. The host family experience is what “makes” this trip; in fact, I’ve learned more Chinese with my host family this summer than I learned at school!

I left the children’s center impressed with the children’s intelligence, motivation, and enthusiasm, but my favorite memories of my time in center are of the children’s laughter and smiles. Despite their disabilities, they were incredibly happy.
