How to Renew Your Visa in Shanghai

What should you take with you to the Visa Office
To extend your China visa in Shanghai, you need to take the visa application form, the original and copy of temporary resident permit, your passport, 2 copies of passport-sized photos and money for the fee (amount depends on your nationality).

Before go to the visa office..
First of all, you should come to the Xubo office to get the original of your temporary resident permit. Also, you need to take a copy of it for extending your visa. You can copy it in our office; it will cost you RMB 0.5 Yuan. After that, the staff in our office will help you to fill in the visa application form in Chinese. After you have the resident permit form (original and a copy) and the visa application form, you can go to the visa office.

Going to the Visa Office
To extend your China visa in Shanghai, you will need to go to the Entry-Exit Administration Office of the Public Security Ministry This office is located at 1500 Min Sheng Road. (上海民生路1500号) To get to the office, follow these directions:

Take Metro Line 2 to the station called Shanghai Science & Technology Museum. Leave the station from Exit 3.
Go straight ahead for about 500 meters until you see "Min Sheng Road" - turn right.
You will see Entry-Exit Administration Office of the Public Security Ministry, the People’s Republic of China

The walk from the metro station exit to the visa office will only take about 10 minutes. When you enter the building, take the lift to the third floor and immediately get a queue ticket. Pay close attention to the screen, which will tell you when you will be summoned to one of the numbered staions, where you will submit your douments. The queue is often a bit long. We recommend that you take books along with you, so that you will something to do while waiting. When you do go to the table to submit your documents, just tell the staff "I need to extend one month L visa". All staff speak English. They will give you a receipt, which will tell you when you can return to the office to pick up your visa (and passport.) Usually it takes 5 days. When you return to pick up your visa (and passport), go to your right upon entering the building where you will windows where you can pay your fee and pick up your documents (usually very fast.)


Obtaining a Chinese Visa in Hong Kong

In case volunteers or interns are interested in obtaining a Chinese visa in Hong Kong, they can go to the Chinese embassy in Hong Kong, or the recommended China Visa Service described below.

China Visa Service offers fast and reliable service and is generally faster than the Chinese embassy is. It is even possible to obtain a new Chinese visa within 4 hours.

American Citizen Services in Shanghai

The American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit of the Consular Section assists American citizens in the Shanghai consular district. The Shanghai consular district includes: Shanghai, Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, and Anhui Province. The unit provides a variety of services including: passport and citizenship services, registration of births, assistance with Federal benefits, notarial services, and voting information.

The ACS Unit also provides emergency assistance to American citizens in distress. In an emergency, a Consulate Duty Officer can be reached at any time. In the ACS web pages, you will also find updated travel warnings and lists of local doctors and lawyers.

The American Citizen Services (ACS) Unit in the Consular Section of the U.S. Consulate General is located on the 8th floor of the Westgate Mall at 1038 West Nanjing Road, near the corner of Jiangning Road. Elevators to the 8th floor can be reached from the northwest corner of the mall atrium or by entering the office tower lobby from the east side of the building on Feng Xian Road.

Public hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The ACS Unit is closed on Tuesday afternoons. The Consulate is closed on Saturdays and Sundays and on American and local holidays.

Please note that ACS will still hold its twice-weekly “U.S. Citizen Visa Hour” from 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm every Monday and Friday in the ACS waiting room. Participants must arrive by 3:30pm.A U.S. Marine Security Guard is on duty 24 hours a day at the main Consulate General compound and will refer emergencies to the Consulate Duty Officer after hours.
