Internship in the USA with Cultural Homestay International (CHI)

Cultural Homestay International (CHI) is a non-profit, public benefit, educational organization. The purpose of CHI is to bring people of diverse cultures together so those who participate gain a greater knowledge and understanding of one another. CHI believes that the best way to learn about the cultures, languages and customs of other countries is through international work exchanges and homestay programs.

CHI offers two different internship programs in the USA:

      1. Internship Program (IP)
      2. STEP (Short Term Enrichment Program)

What is the Internship Program (IP)?

The IP is a maximum twelve month practical learning experience related to the Intern's course of study and career development objectives. Participation in the IP improves the Intern's understanding of American business practices and methodologies as well as enabling the overseas participant to gain valuable insight into American culture and society. What is the STEP Program?

STEP is an introduction to North American work practices and business English. Placement at a hosting company provides the overseas participants with the opportunity to observe and experience a business operation through observation and basic tasks in a non-paid position for up to a three month duration. How are IP and STEP Programs Different?

STEP is a shorter duration program than IP and is much less expensive than the IP program. To participate in STEP the applicant can come on a Tourist Visa. The IP program offers stays of up to one year but is more expensive, requires much more documentation (such as the DS 2008 training plan) and a J1 visa, which is more expensive and not available to everyone. STEP accepts almost any applicant between the age of 19 and 35 while the IP program has more restrictive requirements.

The actual job placements do not differ significantly for STEP and IP. Therefore, if you intend to stay no more than three months, the STEP program is the best choice.
