2009 Si Chuan Book Drive
This summer we are planning to help a group of children who are victims of the 2008 earthquake in Si Chuan province.
These 150 children range in age from 7 to 14 years old and their school buildings were
completely destroyed by the earthquake. To continue their education during earthquake relief efforts, they
were moved to a school on the outskirts of Cheng Du (the capital city of Si Chuan) where they are
living in very crowded conditions and have only five classrooms for their use. All the materials they have
at Cheng Du, including their clothing, bedding, toys and school materials have been donated. At present
they have no library and only a few books which have been donated. The teachers have told us they have a
room designated to be the library but very little to put there. The slide show below shows
some photos of the earthquake's effect on these children's home towns and the conditions in which
they are living in now at Chengdu.
During the summer of 2009 Xu Bo is planning to help them build up their library. To do this we
will take the following two steps:
1. We will go to the streets of Cheng Du and encourage people to donate their books
to the library. Volunteers will be asked to bring books or toys from their hometowns
and we will hope to exchange these items with the local people for school books. This
will take one or two days.
2. We will decorate the room designated as the children's library. We can work with
local volunteers as
well as the kids in the school. This activity will take about two days.
It is our hope that our efforts will greatly improve the educational facilities that these
children are using.
